Origin of the Oriental rug and the world's most renowned rug weavers

Iran is perhaps the most renowned and fabled of all rug producing countries. To many, Persian rugs (Persia became Iran in 1934) are synonymous with Oriental rugs. Nowhere else is rug weaving as closely identified with a people and culture. Hundreds of cities and villages across Iran are famous for their rug making skills, each with its own individual character and style. The varied offerings appeal to a wide range of tastes - from coarsely woven nomadic and village rugs like Afshar, Belouch and Quashgai, to finely made silk and wool masterpiece3s such as Tabriz, Nain, Qum and Kashan.

Iran was the definitive rug capital until events beginning in the early 1970s dramatically limited their production and availability. The most notable was the 1987 U.S. embargo on Iranian goods. Since the embargo has lifted, we are pleased to feature these fabled rugs once again in our showrooms.
